It had a huge pair of toothy jaws that sat at the head of a reptilian body powered by powerful flippers.

This huge creature looked like a crocodile crossed with a killer whale but twice as dangerous. Tylosaurus was one of the biggest mosasaurs of all time, growing up to 15 metres long. This fish swallowed its prey whole and if it tried to escape, its teeth would have dug into the prey to stop it escaping. A bit like a twisted prehistoric blueprint for a piranha, this six-metre long terror had an upturned jaw full of sharp teeth. Xiphactinus deserves the prize for the ugliest fish of all time. It looked a bit like a Komodo Dragon with a croc’s head and flippers. Halisaurus was a type of four-metre long mosasaur that hunted fish and squid and occasionally scavenged corpses. However, it is also a confirmed dinosaur-eater, as a hadrosaur foot-bone has been found with a Squalicorax tooth embedded in it.

Growing over five metres long, this creature probably fed on many creatures of the time, like the sea bird hesperornis. Squalicorax was a shark that looked a bit like a modern day Great White, but bigger. But there were much deadlier animals in these dangerous seas. This terrific turtle grew over four metres long and, like the modern day leatherback turtle, ate jellyfish and Cephalopods (octopuses and squid). Xiphactinus – Walking With Dinosaurs Sea MonstersĪrchelon was the biggest turtle of all time, and thankfully a herbivore. This period of marine life is so terrible that it has been nicknamed ‘Hell’s Aquarium’ by palaeontologists. But if people knew about the terrifying seas of the Cretaceous, they’d have a lot more on their minds when visiting the seaside. More specifically, the Great White shark.

The shark is the most feared fish alive today.
